Hundreds watch high-speed drama on the Mersey.

THE River Mersey was invaded by powerboats this weekend as the Honda Grand Prix came to town for the first time.

Hundreds of people lined the banks to watch boats capable of 70mph speeds compete in rounds seven and eight of the competition.

As well as the water races, spectators watched the action take to the skies as the Honda Power of Dreams stunt plane performed some amazing acrobatics.

Gavin Parsonage and Nathan Libby in "Negotiator" claimed their first victory of 2005 in round eight of the 225hp championship. The Cornwall-based duo took the chequered flag a mere one second ahead of the all-female Team Raymarine.

The competition now moves to Guernsey.
