Hugo leads the Oscar nominations.

Martin Scorsese's Paris adventure Hugo leads the Oscars with 11 nominations including a nod for Best Picture.

Meryl Streep bagged her 17th Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. The last time she won an Academy Award was in 1982.

The Brits did well with Gary Oldman, Kenneth Branagh and Janet McTeer in the running in the best supporting categories.

As expected George Clooney and Brad Pitt were nominated for Best Actor for their roles in The Descendants and Moneyball respectively.

Melissa McCarthy got a surprise nod for her role in comedy Bridesmaids - a film not expected to do well.

Joining Hugo in the competition for the Best Picture Oscar are nine films, including The Descendants, The Help, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, War Horse and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
