Hoy's the boy to carry flag.

BACK Sir Chris Hoy at 7-2 to be the flag-bearer at the Olympics opening ceremony on July 27, writes Michael Brear.

One clue about why he should be a stronger favourite is the title before his name, but there are other good reasons to back the London 2012 ambassador.

The ceremony is draining even for supreme athletes and tends not to be carried out by those who are in action early on.

The track cycling events don't begin until August 2 so the fourtime gold medallist has enough time to recover.

Rebecca Adlington is second favourite but though swimmer Mark Foster was the 2008 flag bearer a quote from British Swimming chief Michael Scott should be enough to put you off backing her.

"History shows swimmers do not march in the opening ceremony.

The decision has to be based on performance," he said.

UK Athletics has withdrawn its competitors.
