Howson and Friend both go under knife.

GEORGE Friend and Jonny Howson were both due to undergo surgery yesterday.

Club captain Friend revealed last week he was set to go under the knife in a bid to finally fix an adductor injury that has plagued him since the end of last season. Friend has a ruptured tendon, Boro have revealed.

Howson will also have surgery on a hernia that ruled him out of the game against Bristol City before the break.

It's not clear at this stage how long Friend and Howson will be out of action.

Staying on the injury front, there's better news for Woodgate with Dani Ayala having resumed training. Ayala also missed the draw at Ashton Gate before the break.

The Spaniard will be available for the visit of Reading this weekend, but that game might come too soon for left-back Hayden Coulson.

Boro say Coulson, who hasn't featured since the home defeat to Brentford on August 10, is "making progress".

Meanwhile, Rudy Gestede suffered a hamstring injury while away on international duty with Benin and is getting treatment.
