How hoaxer was caught.

The hunt to track down Yorkshire Ripper hoaxer Wearside Jack will be shown on TV tomorrow.

The Tyne Tees Television programme will follow the efforts to find John Humble, of Sunderland, jailed for eight years for perverting the course of justice.

The Hunt For The Hoaxer at 7.30pm, starts in the concert room in Sunderland Catholic Club in June, 1979, when police set up a tape recorder. The voice of a man claiming to be the Yorkshire Ripper serial killer sounded out.

The speaker became known as Wearside Jack behind the worst hoax in British criminal history and diverted the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper from West Yorkshire to Sunderland.

In 1981 Peter Sutcliffe was jailed for life for murdering thirteen women, and is now in Broadmoor Hospital.
