How do you feel about jays?

Charming or obnoxious however you view them, jays are hard to ignore. Do you entice them to your garden or try to drive them away? Whichever it is, Sunset would like to hear from you.

Most common in the West are Steller's jay (bright blue with a black head and crest) and scrub jay (blue with whitish breast and throat). Others include the gray jay (sometimes gray and white; also called Canada jay), found as far south as northern California and Arizona; blue jay (blue crest, back, wings, and tail; white on lower body with black "necklace" on throat), found in central Colorado and Wyoming; Mexican jay (like scrub, with gray throat), found in the Southwest; and pinon jay (wholly dull blue), found from the intermountain area east to Oklahoma.

In a short letter, here's what we would like to know:

Do you encourage jays? What works best? What doesn't work?

Favorite traits? Do you find certain behavior endearing or funny? Are your birds useful for ridding your garden of insect pests or other nuisances?

Annoying traits? Even if you like jays (but especially if you don't), some habits may be irksome. What bugs you most?

Do you discourage jays? What is most effective? What doesn't seem to help?
