House of Puerto Rico debuts in San Diego, California.

Puerto Rico finally has its own address in the House of Pacific Relations circle of cottages at Balboa Park. The House of Puerto Rico opened Saturday, February 4, 2006. The stucco and red-tiled building hosted its first open house after a 2 p.m. ceremony.

This occasion was the culmination of a 7-year effort by members, friends, and leaders of the House of Puerto Rico San Diego. The goal of this effort was to construct and dedicate to the city of San Diego a public building in Balboa Park, a public park in the City of San Diego, CA, for the purpose of promoting public education regarding the history, art and culture of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and of Puerto Ricans residing in the mainland United States.

The first cottages were built for the California Pacific International Exposition in 1935-36. Afterward, they were turned over to nationality-based groups. The House of Spain is next in line to build. Members of the House of Puerto Rico are "bursting out of our seams," said Aileen Alvarado-Swaisgood. "We're just so proud to be able to have our house. Being the first Latin American cottage is a treat." The Puerto Rico house will be open for several hours every Sunday starting at noon.
