Hotel marks its 10th birthday.

Byline: Sion Barry Business editor

ONE of Cardiff's most popular hotels is celebrating a landmark 10th birthday today.

The Park Plaza Cardiff first opened in 2005. Then the 129-bedroom hotel was part of the Greyfriars Development, a PS30m landmark regeneration scheme on the site of the former Mid Glamorgan County Council offices on Greyfriars Road.

The hotel site was acquired and developed by entrepreneur Martin Morris. After developing the site, he handed control over to sons Jamie Morris, who now acts as chief executive, and Tobie Morris, creative director. The hotel has remained family owned and run by the Morris' ever since as a Park Plaza franchise.

In the past 10 years the hotel has evolved to become a celebrity favourite, often acting as the Welsh base for a large number of high-profile personalities, including the likes of Take That, Michael Jordan, One Direction, Craig Bellamy, James Corden and the Wales rugby team.

The hotel boasts an annual occupancy rate well in excess of 80% and the turnover for the last financial year was PS7.5m.

Owner Martin Morris said "We're proud of what the hotel has become in the last decade and of its enviable reputation in the Welsh hospitality scene. Park Plaza Cardiff is widely recognised as one of the capital's premier hotel and leisure destinations and I am hugely proud of everyone involved in our success.

"In the past 10 years we have weathered a global recession and a glut of new competitors in the city, however, during this time the hotel has thrived and gone from strength to strength.

"This is testament to the hard work, belief and attention to detail of the Park Plaza Cardiff team."

Margaret Waters, the hotel's general manager and the city's longest serving hotelier, said: "The Welsh tourism landscape has undoubtedly evolved since Park Plaza Cardiff opened in 2005.

"However, not only have we endured but we have matured to become a mainstay on the capital's hospitality scene, a hotel that is rightly regarded as being at the top of its class."
