It works for flowers, so why not cakes? Consumers can go to www.cakeusa.com, order a custom-made cake online and have it delivered anywhere in the country. The site links a nationwide network of independent bakeries-including supermarkets-much the way florists are linked at FTD or 1800-Flowers. Bakeries can join the site for free if they offer decorated cakes and deliver within their trading area. For now the focus is on decorated, round and sheet cakes, but expansion plans will include regional specialties, such as New Orleans King cakes.

Here is a catch-of-the-day: At www.gotradeseafood.com, seafood buyers can negotiate privately with several suppliers at the same time, close a deal with any criteria they specify, and access online credit reports and freight fulfillment services.

Bakery, produce, grocery buyers-and squirrels-might want to check out www.enuts.com, a business-to-business exchange designed specifically for tree nut buyers and sellers. Through the site, buyers gain access to the world's premier suppliers of nuts, and make decisions based on price and product quality. Sellers can establish an online storefront, increasing sales through a new channel of distribution without the expense of developing their own site. Online auctions, order status and management tracking system are among the services offered through the site. A related sire, www.enutsetc.com, links buyers and sellers of seeds, dried fruit and ingredient supplies.

At www.emacdirecr.com, retailers can finance equipment-purchasing programs. The site allows retailers to decide how they want to structure the loans, determine when they get the capital, and bundle equipment purchases from different distributors or manufacturers in a single loan transaction to get greater negotiating leverage. The site also offers mortgages and loans.

www.sellMEAT.com is a new B2B Web site offering real-time buying and selling of raw and further-processed meat and poultry products. The site, which was scheduled to be launched April 17, offers electronic trading, along with value-added services, direct customer support and meat industry news.
