Be one step ahead in the hair style stakes and join leading ladies such as Eva Longoria to get yourself the hottest colour for the year ( the richest chocolaty brown!

It seems 2006 is the year of the brunette. In fact, brunette beauties are storming the UK with over 53% of 16-24 year olds having brown hair.

Research from L'Oreal Professionnel also found that 50% of those interviewed feel brunette girls are more glamorous and sophisticated than their blonde or red-haired friends!

Geordie girls stay true to their local heroes when it comes to hair and fashion as they voted Jayne Middlemiss their favourite treacle-tressed dame with 18.5% of the vote, over double her nearest competitor Catherine Zeta Jones.

When questioned, 26.1% of blonde entrants to the survey stated that having brown hair could result in them being taken more seriously and 44.8% of all questioned thought that being a brunette would boost their confidence levels!

Celebrity hair is always a hot topic and Catherine Zeta Jones leads the field. Her lustrous brown locks ensured she was voted the UK's favourite, taking 21.5% of the votes.

Newly-announced mother-to-be Mrs Pitt (Angelina Jolie) came in a close second.

So what attracts us to brunettes? Of over 1,000 women questioned, the vast majority (48%) felt that their favourite celebrity looked more down-to-earth and friendly; 45% felt brunettes appear more confident and in control of what they are doing; and 45% of blondes would consider changing their hair colour to brown to create a new sophisticated image for themselves!

Bobby Scott, from Q S V Salon, said: "Here in Newcastle we have noticed a growing number of women are either reverting back to their original brunette shade or even converting from blonde to brunette. With such big name celebrities as Eva Longoria ( and even Brad Pitt ( sporting dark hair, it's not long before others follow suit!"

It's official! Brunettes are sophisticated and glamorous with kick-ass attitude. Going brunette in 2006 looks set to be the only shade this year.
