Hot Movies: A fine romance for odd couples; PLAYING BY HEART.

IN this artfully constructed tale of five couples learning about love, life and all that stuff, a terrific cast keep you hanging right on in there with them.

Angelina Jolie is unmissable as a motor-mouthed club chick who can't understand why the cute guy with the blue hair (Ryan Phillipe) rejects her advances.

Gillian Anderson is great too as a neurotic theatre director who presses the self-destruct button on her budding romance with an architect (Jon Stewart) because he's just too good to be true.

Other odd couples include Sean Connery and Gena Rowlands coping with an ancient infidelity and a brand new brain tumour, Madeleine Stowe and Anthony Edwards getting jiggy with it and Dennis Quaid trying his luck in singles bars.

A smart, occasionally soppy romance for grown-ups.
