Host of programmes to mark Biological Diversity Day.

Muscat: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, will mark the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) today.

Under the patronage of the ministry, various programmes have been arranged to mark the day and spread awareness on the importance of preservation

of biodiversity.

The United Nations proclaimed May 22 IDB to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

2011 is the International Year of Forests and forest biodiversity is the theme for this year's IDB.

Designation of IDB 2011 on the theme of forests provides Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and everyone interested in forests, the opportunity to raise awareness of the issue and increase practical action.

The Sultanate has signed the Convention on Biological Diversity in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Earth Summit) held in 1992 in

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that was approved as per the Royal Decree

No. 119/94.
