Hospitals set for winter rush.

NORTH West Wales NHS Trust has planned for increased admissions over the winter period and has offered all health care workers vaccinations against flu.

Doctors and nurses, as well as support workers at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, Llandudno General Hospital and the trust's community hospitals have all been offered the vaccinations.

Carol Henshaw, senior nurse for district nursing, said: "Increased community nursing resources have been provided to support the 'care pathway' for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis. This will mean that most cases will be treated as out-patients and then in their own homes rather than as an inpatient admission.

"This will help to relieve the pressure on the wards and also means that the patient will not have to spend as much time in hospital."

The development of an emergency medical assessment unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd has been instrumental in managing emergency medical admissions. All patients are assessed and managed in one area and a plan of care is prepared for each patient.

"Each patient is seen by a consultant physician within 24 hours of admission, " said Susan Roberts, who was recently appointed to manage the unit.

Rapid response teams have been established on Anglesey and in the north Gwynedd area. The teams include nurses, therapists and social workers who work to ensure that in appropriate cases patients can be cared for in their own home rather than be admitted to hospital.
