Hospital staff blow for the elderly.

Byline: By Wales on Sunday

A staff crisis is forcing a ward at a Powys hospital to close tomorrow.

The Elderly Mentally Infirm unit at Ysbyty Bro Ddyfi in Machynlleth will shut for three months.

Pensioners from the area requiring hospital treatment for the next 12 weeks will be treated in Newtown.

Machynlleth hospital's staff problems have been a cause of controversy for months with wards temporarily closing due to illness and staff shortages.

Paul Harris, Chairman of Montgomeryshire Community Health Council said: 'We have a feeling the Local Health Board would like the EMI unit in Machynlleth to stay closed after the three months and concentrate things in Newtown.'

A Powys LHB spokeswoman said: 'If, after the three-month period, the model of care at Machynlleth provides a better service, the local health board may talk with Montgomery Community Health Council about a permanent change in services.'
