Horse put down in road; IN BRIEF.

A HORSE had to be destroyed after it collapsed on the Coast Road near North Shields.

Police were called at around 3.45pm on Monday after reports that a horse had become unwell while travelling along the busy A-road.

A vet was called to the scene to help the fallen horse, which had been pulling a cart.

Sadly, the horse was found to be too unwell for treatment and the vet had to put the horse down at the scene.

Northumbria Police managed disruption to traffic - but they said this was minimal on a bank holiday.

The news comes less than a week after a cow was shot by police marksmen on the same road, near Wallsend.

The distressed beast was one of three to escape from a farm on May 17.
