A two-year-old filly had to be put down at a Kentucky race course after a violent collision with another horse.

Jockey Tony Farina escaped unhurt after being unseated but his three-year-old colt Doctor Rap slammed into Rasberry Kiss, leaving both horses entangled on the ground at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

Doctor Rap had severe bruising and possible nerve damage, but Rasberry Kiss suffered multiple fractures and had to be destroyed.

Larry Lague, Rasberry Kiss's jockey, was taken to hospital for an X-ray on his foot.

The incident occurred at the Dawn at the Downs event, ahead of this weekend's Kentucky Derby.

Neither horse had been scheduled to take part in the race.
