Horse Racing: July Cup entry Red Clubs to take up stud duties at Tally-Ho Stud next year; BLOODSTOCK DESK.

Byline: By Nancy Sexton

RED CLUBS, winner of the Group 2 Diadem Stakes last season, will take up stud duties next year at Tony O'Callaghan's Tally-Ho Stud in County Westmeath. O'Callaghan purchased the 2008 breeding rights to the son of Red Ransom in a deal brokered by Adrian Nicholl of BBA Ireland.

The Barry Hills-trained four-year-old colt will continue to race in the colours of Ronald Arculli and is being aimed at Friday's Group 1 Darley July Cup, for which he is priced at 10-1 by Ladbrokes.

Red Clubs has won five of his 21 starts and pounds 293,795 in prize-money. An ultra-tough and precocious colt, he scored a hat-trick of impressive victories early in his juvenile career which culminated in an authoritative display in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot at York.

However, arguably his best run at two came when he finished second in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes to Amadeus Wolf. He also finished third to George Washington in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes and fourth to Sir Percy in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.

Red Clubs regained the winning thread as a three-year-old when easily taking the Group 3 Greenham Stakes, prompting connections to target the 2,000 Guineas. Having failed to stay at Newmarket, a drop back to sprint distances saw him improve again, most notably when defeating Baltic King and Fayr Jag in the Diadem.

This season, Red Clubs has acquitted himself well in Group 1 company, most recently when finishing a close fourth to Soldier's Tale in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

A 40,000gns yearling purchase, Red Clubs hails from the Roberto line and will appeal as an outcross for most mares. Out of the dual Listed winner Two Clubs, he is from the immediate family of top-class sprinter and useful sire Petong, who carved his own reputation by siring fast, precocious two-year-olds.
