Horse Racing: Newbury starts watering; WEEKEND UPDATE.

NEWBURY is hoping to maintain good to firm ground for its two-day fixture at the weekend.

The going at the Berkshire venue is currently described as being on the fast side of good, so officials have decided to turn on the taps.

Clerk of the course Richard Osgood said: "We have put six millimetres on the course as we missed all of the rain. For the rest of the month we have only had 1.8 millimetres of rain. We are due for changeable conditions and some showers, some of which could be heavy.

"We are good to firm at the moment, though."
