Horse Racing: BETFLARE MAYHEM; Blaze leads to delay at Uttoxeter.
KEN'S Dream got favourite backers off to a winning start in the Betfair.com Novices' Hurdle when racing eventually got under way at a sweltering Uttoxeter yesterday.
The start of proceedings was delayed by an hour and 40 minutes due to a blaze in the Tattersalls enclosure and course officials had to wait for the all-clear from the fire authorities.
There was chaos when a major fire held up the start of the Summer National meeting.
The blaze broke out in the mobile Betfair unit as the runners for the first race were circling the paddock.
Safety officers finally gave the meeting the go-ahead but the Betfair unit involved was destroyed.
And punters were the first to benefit from the go-ahead when the well-backed 15-8 market leader proved too good for his rivals.
Jimmy McCarthy sent Ken's Dream to the front three from home and Lucy Wadham's charge stayed on strongly to beat It's A Roofer by a length and a half.
Mrs Wadham was represented by her husband, Justin, who said: "We were very pleased with that. He had that fall in the Swinton so it's nice to see him have a confidence-boosting run and he jumped beautifully so it's just what he wanted.
"I think he might go for one of the Jewson Novices' with perhaps the long-term plan to go for the final at Cheltenham."
