Dr. David Schjott, an Okaloosa-Walton Community College social science instructor, has been named Professor of the Year by the Florida Association of Community Colleges. The annual award recognizes teaching excellence in the Florida Community College system.

The Chancellor of the City University of New York honored eight faculty members at Bronx Community College for achieving national recognition. Music teacher Thomas Cipullo received a fellowship from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, among other honors. Biology instructor Dr. John Davis received a major research grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences to continue a minority biomedical research program at the college along with Vincent Kissel. Dr. Debra Gonsher, communications department chairwoman, produced a documentary for ABC-TV titled "Grateful Am I to You." Professor Isabel Mirsky of the communications department and Howard Wach of the history department collaborated on a project titled, Advancing the Humanities Through Technology at Community Colleges. Historian Kathleen Williams won the Edward S. Miller History Prize for an article published in the Naval War College Journal, and music faculty member Benjamin Yarmolinsky received an ASCAP Award for composers.

Dr. Cheryl Babler and Ileana Gantt from Butte College in Oroville, Calif., were chosen to participate in the National Institute for Leadership Development, Leaders 2000.

Gary Sims, instructor of industrial maintenance/electrician at Northeast Community College, Nebraska received the 1999 Imperial Award by the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. He received the highest score on the air conditioning specialist examination for the 1998-99 exam period.

Two Manatee Community College business professors have been elected to the Florida Business Technology Education Association executive board. Dr. Gary Greene was elected president, while Dr. Louis Okonkwo was named the treasure.

Tacoma Community College physics and engineering instructor Ken Gentili recently received an award at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Orlando, Fla. He received a sterling-silver medal, a certificate and a $1,000 check. Gentili has been a member of the Washington school's faculty since 1968. Among other accomplishments, he was recognized for his encouragement of women and minorities to become engineers. In 1995, he established a summer camp to mentor women and minority engineering students.

Dr. Richard Bucher of Baltimore City Community College received the 2000 Maryland Professor of the Year Award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. This award is given to the teacher that displays an extraordinary dedication to teaching, commitment to students, and innovative instructional methods. Dr. Bucher received his Ph.D. in Sociology (with a specialization in Race and Ethnic Relations) from Howard University in 1983. He is editorial consultant for Prentice Hall and is the author of "Diversity Consciousness: Opening Our Minds to People, Cultures, and Opportunities."

The City University of New York honored Professor Jonathan Lang for his scholarship at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Lang is currently researching two competing schools of psychology: nature and nurture. He holds two Ph.D.'s -- one in philosophy and one in psychology -- both from the City University of New York.
