Honeywell expanding turbocharger portfolio in India.
Honeywell Turbo Technologies has developed a turbo application with optimized aerodynamics for micro 2-cylinder diesel engines below 1.0L. This application is currently being deployed in India on 0.8L engines. Honeywell will also feature other industry innovations such as its variable geometry VNT turbos including its third generation VNT combined with a rotary electric actuator - the first time this combination has been available in India. "Honeywell is outpacing the local market by developing products for our global and domestic customers in India specific to India's market based on our proven technology from Europe and around the world," says Thimmaiah NP, general manager and managing director of Honeywell Turbo Technologies in India. "We have quickly become a trusted partner in India given our diverse portfolio and experience in delivering innovative technology to an automotive market which is becoming more sophisticated and demanding every year. With a manufacturing facility and technical center already established here in India, Honeywell expects to become the dominant turbo technology supplier in the market."
Honeywell currently supplies its turbochargers to almost all local and global OEMs present in India. In addition, it serves as an export hub for customers spread throughout the globe. These turbos help global engine platforms achieve EU4, EU5 and EU6 emission standards. Additionally, Honeywell has launched several turbocharger applications including turbochargers for Tata's Indica V2 model (1.4L WG turbo engine), generating exceptional mileage of 25 km per litre. Within the light vehicle segment, turbo penetration in India has grown from 27 percent in 2010 to 31 percent in 2011. It is expected to reach more than 40 percent penetration by 2016. This rapid growth in India is consistent with global penetration growth estimates as manufacturers use turbocharging as an enabler for engine downsizing. A downsized turbocharged engine allows manufacturers to meet higher fuel economy standards and reduced emissions and yet maintain the power and performance of the larger naturally-aspirated engine it replaces.
Honeywell's legacy as a global innovator of turbo technologies in the United States and Europe since the 1950s has led to rapid business wins and growth in India. Honeywell's turbo business sales have tripled in India during the past three years and the manufacturing capacity of the plant in Pune now exceeds more than million and a half units with an ever expanding portfolio of turbos for diesel powered passenger vehicles as well as on- and off-highway commercial vehicles.
Honeywell Turbo Technologies opened its manufacturing facility in Pune in 2005, and has subsequently expanded its Indian operations to include product development and testing activities for both global and local automotive applications at its Technology Center in Bangalore. Today, India also serves as Honeywell's global platform development center for small- and medium-sized turbocharger applications, a rapidly growing segment in the Indian automotive industry.
Honeywell Turbo Technologies is a business unit of Honeywell Transportation Systems, which also consists of Friction Materials. As a leading automotive supplier and 2011 PACE award winner for automotive innovation, technological advancement and business performance, Honeywell Transportation Systems enhances vehicle performance, efficiency and appearance through state-of-the-art technologies, world-class brands, and global solutions tailored for its automotive customers around the world.
