Homes: Beat stubborn stains.

Byline: Tessa Shaw

Q CAN you advise me on how to treat a badly rust-stained radiator. I painted it twice with radiator enamel but the stains have reappeared.

A YOU don't say when you painted your radiator. What you should do if it is rust-stained is to make sure any paint on it is six months old and therefore hard before attempting to repaint it.

With a stained radiator, you first need to use paint remover to get the radiator back to its original state. Then lightly abraid the surface with sandpaper, wash with detergent and give it a fresh water rinse.

Dry thoroughly and then use Hammerite No. 1 Rustbeater (pounds 5.15 for 250 ml). There's a choice of 26 colours.
