Homes: Ask the experts.

Byline: JEAN MacKENZIE and GRACE MacKAY from Consumer Direct

Q I bought a new set of lights for my Christmas tree a couple of weeks ago but I'm concerned it might not be safe. Can you give me any advice on what to look out for when buying something like this?

A You should look for the Kite mark and the CE mark - and these should be on the product itself and not just the packaging. The Kite mark confirms that the British Standards Institute has independently tested the product and that it conforms to the applicable British standard. The CE mark confirms the product meets all the requirements of the European legislation. Beware of special offers and cheap goods, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Bear this in mind especially where safety is concerned. It's also important to know and defend your rights when purchasing goods. Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) goods should be of a satisfactory quality with regards to safety. If you have purchased unsafe goods call Consumer Direct Scotland for advice as we work closely with Local Authority Trading Standards services to tackle safety issues. It is important to report safety issues as they can help prevent re-occurrences.
