Home is not so sweet for Irish children.

THE report by child welfare groups is a shocking indictment of the way children are treated in this country.

Thousands of them have been brutally beaten or even sexually abused by their own parents.

Many more have seen violent rows between their mums and dads and looked helplessly on.

Nearly all the children who have been taken into care need treatment for little minds tortured by memories of an horrific life in the very place where they should be safe - home.

The shocking survey proves that even a country whose economic future looks bright has its dark side.

The need is not so much for more help for the social workers who are trying to patch together shattered young lives.

The root of the problem is the parents who have forgotten the values of family life and the tenderness that goes with it.
