Home & Gardens: Plant of the Week: VERBENA.

They are one of my favourite bedding choices and especially the trailers, which are perfect for hanging baskets. Verbena have delicate, wispy leaves and produce a profusion of tiny flowers to make up one bloom, coming in a variety of colours from cream to violet. A good choice for the container is V. 'Silver Anne', which opens scented flowerheads of pink fading to silvery pink. A more unusual variety is V. 'Peaches and Cream', which has domed heads of flowers containing a mixture of peach and cream colours, which change as the flower matures. For a vibrant border, try the scarlet 'Nero' with the pink 'Cleopatra'. They flower from mid-summer until autumn and benefit from regular dead-heading. For those who prefer a mixture of colours, go for 'Royal Bouquet', 'Showtime' and 'Sparkle Mixed'. For me, they are best off grown as container plants or in window boxes although they will also thrive in small beds. As well as the half hardy annual varieties, there are also some hardy verbenas which can be grown as perennials, including the red 'Lawrence Johnston' and pink 'Sissinghurst', although you may need to protect them from severe frosts.
