A Carpet is never suitable for kitchens as it's not very hygienic and the heavy use means it wears too easily. Plus, the ones recommended for kitchens are horrible.
Choose a hard flooring such as ceramic or vinyl and add a rug, perhaps from the same carpet as your hall floor.
Q How can I make my living room look bigger? You advised using blue before and it has helped but do you have any other tips?
A Try putting mirror and glass shelves in an alcove and if you can, add spotlights or a lamp, too. This will reflect the room and the light. Also put a mirror over the fireplace or sofa.
