Holidays: INSIDE GUIDE - To America by cargo ship.

Byline: Gill Williams

Q MY wife is claustrophobic and can't fly. She'd like to go to Boston in the States to see her grandchildren and the only alternative seems to be by sea. I've heard it's possible to obtain a berth on a cargo ship but have reservations about my wife travelling alone. How do I find out more? - Neil Hancock, via email.

A SPECIALISTS Strand Travel (020 7766 8200, www.strandtravel.co.uk) say women are quite safe travelling solo on cargo ships. They suggest taking a ship to Chester near Philadelphia. Weekly sailings from Liverpool take 10 days non-stop with the return voyage via Antwerp taking 14 days. An outside single cabin costs from pounds 1,145 one way including meals and taxes. From Philadelphia, it's six hours by train to Boston (Amtrak Rail, 01902 326662).
