ISLAMABAD, December 14, 2010 (Balochistan Times): US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron P. Munter while expressing deep grief and sorrow over the passing away of Richard Holbrooke said Tuesday Ambassador Holbrooke had an abiding commitment to deepening the partnership between the United States and Pakistan. Marilyn and I were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our good friend and one of the best friends Pakistan has ever had, Richard Holbrooke. Richard had an abiding commitment to deepening the partnership between the United States and Pakistan, Cameron P. Munter said in a statement issued by the US Embassy here on Tuesday. Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, died Monday, December 13, following emergency surgery to repair an aortic tear. President Obama in a statement called Ambassador Holbrooke: a true giant of American foreign policy who has made America stronger, safer and more respected. The progress that we have made in Afghanistan and Pakistan is due in no small measure to Richards relentless focus on Americas national interest, and pursuit of peace and security. the United States is safer and the world more secure because of the half century of patriotic service of Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. Secretary of State Hillary R. Clinton in her statement described Ambassador Holbrooke as one of Americas fiercest champions and most dedicated public servants. He was one of a kind - a true statesman - and that makes his passing all the more painful. From his early days in Vietnam to his historic role bringing peace to the Balkans to his last mission in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard helped shape our history, manage our perilous present, and secure our future. From Southeast Asia to post-Cold War Europe and around the globe, people have a better chance of a peaceful future because of Richards lifetime of service.
