Hockey Unbeaten run ends Loch Lomond .............. . 6 Dumfries 1st XI..........................3 Dumfries Ladies 1st XI's undefeated season came to an end on Saturday, losing 6-3 away to Loch Lomond.
Dumfries started strongly, creating lots of space and putting the home team under pressure. An early injury to the opposition brought a stop to the game for a few minutes halting Dumfries' flow. As play resumed Loch Lomond got a break, slipping the ball to the right hand side of the D with the player executing the shot and scoring giving Loch Lomond the lead.
Dumfries were quickly back putting the home team under pressure with some great passing. The ball was sent wide to Michelle Cravens where she sent it down the line, sprinting after the ball and out pacing the opposition to pick the ball up on the back line crossing it into the D where Vicky Campbell swept the ball into the goal to bring the game level again.
Loch Lomond took control for the remainder of the first half proving lethal in the D. Great saves from Ally McCubbin but crucial execution in the rebounds saw Loch Lomond score again followed by another two in quick succession. Alice Parker saved a powerful shot off the line to keep the score line at 4-1 into half time. A shock to Dumfries' defence having only conceded six goals all season.
Dumfries had to come out stronger in the second half and pull back some goals. The team came out with their heads up, ready to attack, however, Loch Lomond came out confident and dominated play once again. They had a strong midfield working well together playing the ball round the Dumfries team.
Another two quick goals from Loch Lomond saw them take a 6-1 lead.
Vicky Johnstone held the team together in the middle, creating space and providing great balls up the right line to Ellen Austin.
Dumfries won a short corner from a foot in the D, a straight strike from Naomi Cowan saw it saved by the keeper with the rebound sent back in deflecting off a Loch Lomond played and through the keepers legs given a final push over the line by Michelle Cravens.
Dumfries regained control catching Loch Lomond out on the break with Amy Bradbury holding strong and creating runs down the line. End to end hockey dominated the rest of the second half, Pip Howie and Sue Strachan holding Loch Lomond's strikers out wide preventing further attacks on the D. Beth Sloan drove with the ball from midfield, slipping it out to Ellen on the right and crossing it back through the D to Vicky Campbell on the left post and a great shot on a very tight angle saw Dumfries bring it to 6-3. Dumfries continued to battle with Emily Clark putting pressure on the Loch Lomond defence, however, as the final whistle went, Dumfries go into the Christmas break losing their first three points of the season but remain top of the league.
