Hitachi unveils advanced lithium-ion cell to power eco-friendly cars.
TOKYO, May 19 KyodoHitachi Ltd. said Tuesday it has developed a lithium-ion battery for eco-friendly cars which the company claims to have the world's highest output.
The company will begin distributing samples of the battery to automakers at home and abroad this fall before starting mass production in 2013, according to a statement issued by the company.
Lithium-ion batteries are expected to be widely used in hybrid and electric cars in the future because they are smaller and lighter than nickel hydrogen or lead batteries.
Hitachi already mass produces lithium-ion batteries for use in hybrid trucks and buses.
The new battery has output of 4,500 watts per kilogram, or 70 percent more electricity in accelerating a vehicle compared with the output of its existing product.
The company aims to boost its sales of automotive lithium-ion batteries to 100 billion yen in the year ending March 2016.
