Hitachi to merge home appliance, corporate-use air conditioner arms.

TOKYO, Dec. 22 Kyodo

Hitachi Ltd. said Thursday it will have its home electrical appliance-making subsidiary and corporate-use air conditioner-making arm merge on April 1.

To be unified are Hitachi Home & Life Solutions Inc. and Hitachi Air Conditioning Systems Co., according to the electronics giant.

Hitachi will arrange for the two to hand over operations in charge of devising sales strategies to the parent.

The Hitachi group's home appliance business has been taking a hit from sluggish sales of flat-panel television and so-called ''white goods'' home products such as washers, cleaners and refrigerators.

Hitachi is planning to turn around flagging performances of home appliance operations with the unification of the two subsidiaries, it said.

Hitachi wants to increase combined sales at the parent's digital home appliance division and the unifying enterprises to 2 trillion yen in fiscal 2010 from 1.3 trillion yen in fiscal 2004, it added.
