Hit and run motorist arrested in UAE.

A motorist who sped off after running over and killing a pedestrian was snared when police linked a fragment of his wing mirror to his registered car.

The Asian driver caused the death of the Bangladeshi as the man walked from the factory he worked at to his accommodation in the Al Jazeera Al Hamra area of Ras Al Khaimah.

RAK Police said the incident took place at 9.30pm on November 6 and that no one caught the plate number of the vehicle.

The pedestrian, who was in his thirties, was found heavily bleeding and died before he could be taken to hospital.

Colonel Ali Al Alkim, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department at RAK Police, said: "The driver had fled the scene after hitting and killing the pedestrian and no one saw him.

"But small fragments from the car, including parts of a side mirror that broke off, were left at the scene. This helped the investigation team in determining the vehicle type and thus leading to the arrest of the driver."

Investigators checked everyone that owned that model of car -- police would not name the car type -- and eventually traced him a week later.

Police said the driver initially denied causing the accident but later admitted he hit the pedestrian and did not stop.

He said it was dark and he did not see the factory worker, but police said it appeared he was speeding.

Al Alkim said: "All motorists must abide by the set speed and must stop after causing an accident.

"The public is requested to cooperate with police and report any accidents right away."

The Asian driver has been referred to prosecutors.
