History and outdoor adventure in Durango.

History and outdoor adventure in Durango Few places offer the diversity of vacation experiences that can be found within an hour's drive of Durango. The area seems littered with history, from Anasazi cliff dwellings carved into the mesas of the Colorado Plateau to abandoned silver mines in the shadow of snow-covered peaks in the San Juan Mountains. If you're looking for challenging physical pursuits, you can raft the Animas River, hike the Colorado Trail, or mountain-bike through San Juan National Forest. Jeep tours, horseback rides, and rides on a narrow-gauge steam train offer other ways of touring the region.

En route to Durango from Los Angeles (800 miles) or Phoenix (450 miles), you can make easy detours to the Grand Canyon or Canyon de Chelly on the Navajo Reservation.

Durango itself is rich in history, and its 6,523-foot elevation keeps it relatively cool in summer. Lodging in and around town ranges from the restored Strater and General Palmer hotels on Main Avenue to secluded guest ranches and resorts. For information on lodging and campgrounds, call (303) 247-0312, or central reservations at (800) 525-8855.
