Historical Society hosts dinner honouring Canadian Navy.
The South Dumfries Historical Society will be hosting a special dinner on Saturday, Nov. 14 at the St. George Legion to honour the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy.Tickets have been selling fast and it looks like we will have another sell-out like we did last year.
Our guest speaker will be Lieutenant Commander Glenna Swing of HMCS Star (Hamilton), who will speak about the adventures of the HMCS Haida.
The Haida has been in the news recently as it was confirmed that Prince Charles would be attending a dedication ceremony at the ship on Thursday, Nov. 5.
There is also excitement about another feature of the evening, a review of 100 years of songs about the navy by singer Sharilyn Vandermolen. Vandermolen has recently completed a 10-day schedule at Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton where her one-act play was reprised as one of the best entries in the recent Fringe Festival of Hamilton. She and her accompanist Trevor will present a variety of popular songs and patriotic songs with opportunities for everyone to join in along the way.
It is also anticipated that several navy veterans will be on hand to share photos and memories from the wars. For more information call Cliff Jones at 448-1075 or David Simpson at 448-1053.
