Hirsute ... for her.

And what about women? Jokes about Greek-heritage mustaches and Julia Roberts's unshaved armpits abound. But what about the ladies who dig gals like Le Tigre's J.D. Samson (below) or Rae Dawn Chong in Quest for Fire? "Bearded ladies! Love 'em!" enthuses Laura Johnston, 44, a nurse from New Mexico. As far as womanscaping, she says, "there is a cadre of lesbians who like hairier women, the she-bears of the sapphic world. I haven't shaved my legs since the '80s, and my pits are unshaved, but I get my eyebrows waxed. For some bearded ladies I have met at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, it's a way of freeing yourself from the expectations of other people and being your own woman."--S.A.
