Hillsborough, Orange County bars help kick off 50-year anniversary celebration.
Board of Governors member Kelly Overstreet Johnson, chair of the committee planning 50th anniversary activities, said the Orlando event is set for February 25 at the Orlando Museum of Art. It is being held in conjunction with a fundraiser for the Orange County Bar Association's legal aid program.
The Tampa event will be March 25 in conjunction with the Hillsborough County Bar Association's Barristers Ball to benefit Bay Area Legal Services. It will be held at the Bayfront Marriott Hotel.
"I thought it was important to celebrate the 50th anniversary so we could mark a place in time and think about what had happened to our profession in the last 50 years," said Bar President Edith Osman. "It was particularly eventful since it came at the same time as the turn of the millennium."
Talking with bar organizations around the state "made me realize how little history we have chronicled," she added. "Aside from celebrating, we're also looking for information and taking it as a time to accumulate information about our Bar."
The events will also, Osman said, "promote camaraderie and good feelings in the profession."
"Of course, we want to involve all of our members," she said. "That's why we're working with the local bars."

Johnson said many other projects are being planned or under consideration as part of the 50-year celebration. Those include the April issue of the Bar Journal being devoted to the Bar's first 50 years, a joint dinner with the Florida Association for Women Lawyers honoring the first 100 women members of the Bar (FAWL is currently collecting the names and information about those members), a video history including interviews with past presidents, and a special dinner and speaker marking the 50th year.
The celebration has already begun, with the presentation in December of a special proclamation from the Florida Cabinet to Osman.
In addition, the Bar is collecting memorabilia about its first 50 years, and asking members to search their offices and records for photographs, documents and other items to be used for the Journal special issue and also in a special display at the June Annual Meeting. Submissions may be sent to: 50-Year Celebration, The Florida Bar, 650 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee 32399-2300. All submissions will be returned.
FAWL is also looking for researchers to track down information about the Bar's first 100 women members.
