Highway construction standstill threatens 1,500 building workers in Macedonia.

The construction of the two highways of 107 km was expected to cost the country almost 508 million euros. Recent estimates, however, showed that the made oversights would drive up the final cost by at least a hundred million euros.

The standstill in the construction of the Kicevo-Ohrid and Miladinovci-Stip highways is turning into a serious threat to the home companies subcontracted by China's Sinohydro. The building association demands that a solution be urgently found to avoid a situation in which Macedonia's builders would become a collateral damage. Five Macedonian companies are working on the two highways.

"Rather than just stopping all construction activities, consideration should also be given to those firms working on these projects. Over 1,000 people are working on the Kicevo-Ohrid highway and some 500-600 on the Miladinovci-Stip highway, which is a large number," says Andreja Serafimovski, President of the Association of Civil Engineering, Building Materials and Non-Metal Industries.

Transport and Communications Minister Goran Sugareski hasn't said yet how much the work would be delayed and how much more the construction of the highways would cost. The Ministry merely says the situation is very complex.
