Highly fluorinated nanosheets.

Nanotechnologists have become increasingly interested in the highly tunable surface properties that ultrathin nanofilms can confer to solid objects, without affecting the behavior of the bulk material. Bottom-up methods, whereby the structure is dictated by the composition of building blocks at the molecular level, offer the greatest degree of organization and uniformity of surface at the nanoscale. In particular, the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique can be used to create layers with a more highly controlled morphology than many other common layer-deposition methods such as spin coating. This review by Miyashita et al. looks at the use of the LB technique combined with highly fluorinated polymeric starting materials to manipulate surface properties such as wettability, friction, optics, and chemical and thermal resistance. This elegant method of surface coating looks set to revolutionize the way advanced surface properties are created for applications such as microfluidics and magnetic memory devices.
