Highlights Magazine introduces new podcast for kids.

Byline: Central Penn Parent

Hand-held devices for kids have been a life saver for families on long car rides. But for a change of pace - also ideal for kids who get car sick looking at devices - parents can turn to podcasts specifically created for kids. Now an iconic children's magazine has joined the burgeoning field. Highlights For Children, Inc. has teamed up with kids' podcast leader,Tinkercast, to launch <em>Highlights Hangout.</em> It features a new, 20-25 minute episode released on the first Monday of each month.

The magazine-style show offers a unique audio spin on the stories, characters, puzzles, and jokes that have been gracing the pages of Highlights Magazine since it was first published in 1946 in Honesdale, Wayne County. The new podcast continue the work of Highlights and its "fun with a purpose" approach. It is being produced in partnership with Tinkercast, creators of the award-winning, NPR-distributed podcast,<em>Wow in the World</em>, which is currently the most popular podcast for kids.

Hosted by Tim Kubart (Sunny Side Up, Children's Grammy winner) and Juanita Andersen (Barrel of Monkeys, Theater for Young People), the show features Highlights favorites "Goofus and Gallant," "Ask Arizona," "The Hidden Sound Game" ("Hidden Pictures" with sounds), and listener-submitted "HangMail" featuring jokes, tongue twisters, poems and wow-worthy science questions answered by Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz from<em>Wow in the World</em>!

The premiere episode "Hang Ten" sets the new audio format for the familiar content as hosts Tim and Juanita introduce listeners to a new way to "play the Highlights way." They reveal the Hidden Sound, a new sonic twist on the classic Highlights' Hidden Picture Game, and invite listeners to listen for, identify, and count up the Hidden Sounds throughout the show. Other features will include HangMail; a visit to an imaginary amusement park where they play "I Can't Believe this Imaginary Wave Pool Has a Line This Long Game Show" and where they learn about the sport of surfing; songs; and burning science questions answered.

Episode 2, "I Spy the Sky," was released earlier this week and features Paws the dog on an "<em>I Spy the Sky Scavenger Hunt"</em>where listeners follow clues that lead them to a Meteor Shower Party.
