Higher Education Council / Meeting.

Muscat, Nov 1 (ONA)- The Higher Education Council today held its third meeting of the year at the Diwan of Royal Court HQs' in Muscat under the chair of Sayyid Khalid bin Hilal bin Saud al- Busaidi, Minister of the Diwan of Royal Court and Chairman of the Higher Education Council. The Chairman of the Higher Education Council and its members congratulated His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said on the advent of Edia Al Adhah and the 41st Glorious National Day appealing to Allah the Almighty for the return of these happy occasions on His Majesty and the Omani loyal people and more progress and prosperity for the Sultanate under the wise leadership of H.M. the Sultan. The meeting covered the contents of the Royal speech of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said in the opening of the fifth term of the Council of Oman and the affirmation of the constant interest of His Majesty in human resources development. The Council hailed the royal directives oh His Majesty the Sultan to conduct a comprehensive review of the educational process to achieve the developmental aspirations and create a generation empowered with skills and experiences. The Higher Education Council expressed deep thanks and appreciation to His Majesty the Sultan for increasing the admission rate to the higher education institutions and the remarkable increase in the number of scholarships and grants ; an impressive leap at the higher education sector in the sultanate that will have its positive impact on the socioeconomic development. The Council discussed a number of issues listed on its agenda including but not limited to restructuring of the education system, increasing the admission capacity to the higher education institutions, technical education, its quality control, diversifying its outputs to meet the actual needs of the work market in light of the Council of Ministers' directive in this regard. The Council also reviewed the investment rates at the private universities in the Sultanate, the requests for financial subsidy submitted by some higher education institutions. It also discussed the establishment of Muscat Private University. The Council approved the establishment of Muscat Private University and delegated Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) with the task of setting up the foundation committee for the university in collaboration with the Higher Education Ministry and inviting shareholders at the earliest to implement the decision. On the other hand, the Council reviewed the report submitted by Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) on the study about work market needs and their compatibility with the higher education outputs in the Sultanate and the progress made in this project. The Council also reviewed a number of memos raised by the different departments interested in the education sector in the Sultanate. The Council took the suitable decisions on the issues listed on its agenda. -----Ends/ MS/FS
