High-clarity PET gives added UV protection.
A new PET resin contains an FDA-approved uv absorber that protects delicate colors, flavors, vitamins and nutrients in custom packaging for foods, beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and personal-care products. The uv absorber is chemically bound to the polymer chain, which is said to ensure consistent uv performance and no plateout on molds or dryers. Containers made from this resin have been shown to block virtually all UV light from 320 to 370 rim, whereas standard PET and other packaging materials, including polyolefins and glass, allow UV light to pass through the packaging.New Vitiva PET PC715 from Voridian, div. of Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn., also reportedly maintains the crystal clarity of standard PET. That sets it apart from Voridian's Heatwave PET for hot-fill applications, which also has added uv protection. Vitiva is a drop-in replacement for standard PET in existing preform and bottle molds.
