Hiding the cooler, air conditioner.

It's and open-and-shut case of cooler camouflage at working in Barbara and Jack Alexander's family room in Granada Hills, California.

Economy and efficiency dictated installation of their new evaporative cooler right below the existing wall-mounted room air conditioner. To conceal the stacked units, Mrs. Alexander nailed together a frame of pine 1-by-4s, reinforcing its corners with 1-inch metal L-brackets. She used six more brackets to screw the frame to the wall studs, and also nailed the top to a 1-by-1 ledger nailed to the wall.

Hinges and woodscrews attach the painted ready-made shutters to the frame.
