BEIRUT: Hezbollah Thursday slammed the Central Bank's circular to tighten the noose on the finances of the party. "The circulars issued recently by the governor of the Central Bank in accordance with the dirty U.S. law is unjustified submission to the American monetary mandate on our country," the party said in a statement, referring to the Central Bank's decision issued earlier this month that subjects Lebanese banks to a recently passed U.S. law targeting Hezbollah.
The party warned that this law would exacerbate the financial crisis in the country and drive it toward bankruptcy, eventually leading to a rift between the banks and a large segment of Lebanese -- a likely allusion to the Shiite community.
It added that these circulars would put Lebanon in jeopardy and would lead to total chaos.
"Hezbollah's parliamentary bloc calls on the governor of the Central Bank to reconsider the recent circulars so they can be in line with national sovereignty. We also call on the government to take the appropriate measures to avoid negative repercussion caused by these circulars," the party said.
The party repeated its total rejection of the U.S. law, saying it could contribute to strife.
