Heterocyclic Compounds, Volume 24 Part 3: Fused Pyrimidines.

Fused Pyrimidines: Volume 24 part 3 Heterocyclic Compounds, By D.J. Brown (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 605 Third Avenue, New York 10158, 1988, 730 pp. US $225.00. The chemistry of the pteridines has developed during a period of over a century and to undertake a general review of the area is no mean task. The development covers early synthetic work, studies on butterly wing pigments (with all of the attendant difficuties and frustrations), the isolation and synthesis of folic acid, and the isolation and identification of a variety of other natural products. Justice is more than done to this area by D.J. Brown in a book that packs a wealth of information in a condensed style.

The subject matter is organized in terms of syntheses and reactions of pteridines. Pertinent information is collected in tables, and the assembled data on ionization and spectroscopic data towards the end of the book provide a useful compendium. Gaps in our knowledge of the area will be apparent to readers, and may well serve to stimulate further work. The book is well produced, with over 1,700 references which are drawn from the literature to early 1987; these include references to biochemically and medically relevant topics such as methotrexate therapy. It is a book for the libraries of research institutes and universities, primarily of interest to chemists, medicinal chemists, and biochemists engaged in pteridine research. M.S.
