Heroes in Action.

Elizabeth Streb's company, STREB, is known for its risk taking, extreme physicality and the sound of grunts and splats as dancers land and exhale audibly. Streb encourages her audiences to participate audibly, and they often do. But in the current touring production of Action Heroes, STREB also creates visual drama through characterization of the heroes and the small worlds in which they move. STREB then provides a sort of synthesis of it all with pieces such as "Air Swim," "Break Thru," "Squirm" and "Punch the Jump" [see review of Action Heroes by Gigi Berardi on page 88]. Photographer Steven Caras has captured the beauty and clarity of these tableaux, proving once again the power of movement contrasted with stillness.
