JOEY BARTON believes Scotland's best hopes of qualifying for the next World Cup could hinge upon Roy Hodgson surviving the sack after the Euros.

The outspoken Scouser has laid into Hodgson and his Turn to Page 49 From Back Page coaching team after watching them toss away a lead over Russia in their Group B opener here in Marseille.

And that late collapse has helped convince Rangers new boy Barton his country must axe the man in charge before they face the Auld Enemy in the next qualification campaign for Russia 2018.

After failing to reach the Euros, Gordon Strachan and his men face an even more arduous campaign as they fight it out with England, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania and Malta for one of two slots at the top of Group F. And Barton said: "I've spoken to Scotland fans who are hoping Hodgson does just well enough at this tournament to keep his job for the next World Cup campaign and I can understand how they are thinking.
