Here's the news: I'm pregnant; MARY'S JOY OVER BABY.
ITN newsreader Mary Nightingale is three months pregnant, it was revealed last night.
The former Wish You Were Here host has told close friends that she and husband, television producer Paul Fenwick, are "overjoyed" by the news.
TV favourite Mary is due to give birth in January. Only a year ago the 38-year-old presenter suffered the heartbreak of a miscarriage with her first child.
A close friend of the star said: "As you can imagine Mary and Paul are absolutely delighted. They have both had their share of heartache and the news has come as such a wonderful surprise to everyone.
"Mary and Paul will make fantastic parents."
Nightingale quit presenting holiday show Wish You Were Here in July last year to spend more time with her husband.
She found that the constant travelling, combined with her gruelling ITN schedule, were taking their toll both mentally and physically
Problems came to a head in February 2001 when Mary was admitted to hospital saying that she was suffering from exhaustion.
But months later she revealed that she had, in fact, suffered a miscarriage.
Mary said at the time: "The strain was beginning to tell, in that I was just so exhausted.
"The final straw came when I had to go into hospital and was then laid up for two weeks. The truth is that I had a miscarriage.
"It was a very rocky time and I still can't bear to go into it. It is a very personal and a very painful thing, and it not only affects me but Paul and the rest of the family."
Mary and Paul, who share a pounds 2.5million house in Chiswick, west London, married in New York in April 2000 after 15 years together. Mary - who presents ITN's 6.30pm bulletin - began her career in the 80s as a City bond trader. One of four children, she was privately educated before gaining a 2:1 in English from London University.
In 1990 Mary landed a job reading financial news bulletins for a Japanese TV company.
Shortly afterwards the station signed another contract to provide bulletins for BBC television's World Service where she was spotted by ITN.
In April 2000, Mary faced her most embarrassing experience when she was accosted by Michael Barrymore at the London Restaurant Awards.
The comic grappled the red-faced star to the floor then threw her over his shoulder in a fireman's lift revealing her underwear.
Asked about the baby, her agent Alex Armitage last night refused to comment saying: "I'm not saying if she is and I wouldn't say if she isn't."
