Help for livestock feeding as snow returns.

THE WELSH Assembly Government has relaxed rules on supplementary feeding to help livestock farmers during bad weather.

Officials accept that many hill are still facing severe problems with feeding their animals in the snow.

Farmers in agri-environment schemes which restrict supplementary feeding will now be able to give their livestock additional feed.

Supplementary feeding can continue for four days after snow has cleared if the ground remains frozen. It should stop once the ground thaws.

The temporary relaxation will remain in force until January 31.

A WAG spokesman said: "Wherever possible, land not under agri-environment land management should be used first for supplementary feeding."

To limit environmental damage Cardiff is offering new guidance:. Supplementary feeding areas should be moved frequently;. Any leftover forage should be after the snow has thawed;. Feeding should not take place on archaeological features;. On moorland and common land, graziers should inform landowners of their intentions;. Farmers on SSSI-designated land must first contact the CCW.

WAG warned farmers to guard against compromising their cross compliance requirements.

NFU Cymru described the move as an "enormous help".
