Heart of the church.

The June 19-July 2 issue presented news and articles centering on the heart of church life today The realities are stark and challenging, especially regarding the hierarchical structure of the church and its continued stance of being beyond reproach, correction or change. It is an unreal position.

The growing intensity of opposition to any considerations for change contradicts the church's description of itself as semper reformanda. This arrogance of having the complete, absolute, irrevocable truth is the sad expose of a fearful hierarchy and papacy who viewed Vatican n renewals and reforms as a betrayal of the church's inviolate position as God's instrument to the world. Every choice of bishops who reflected this view resulted in the current attitude preventing any deliberations for reforms and changes.

The forthcoming family synod may very well be the catalyst for an ever-renewing church. If not, it could lead to another exodus like that after Humanae Vitae in 1968. Fearful possibilities. Only the entire church, trusting in the Holy Spirit, will bring us to a better and hope-filled future.
