Heart disease is biggest killer; WALES newsbulletin.

CORONARY heart disease remained the biggest killer last year with almost 65,000 people dying from the condition.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics of all deaths registered in England and Wales showed the big three - cancer, coronary heart disease and circulatory diseases such as stroke - remained the top causes of death for 2011.

Cancer accounted for 30% of deaths, while circulatory diseases including heart attacks and strokes accounted for 29% of deaths. Respiratory diseases including pneumonia were responsible for 14%. The second leading cause of mortality in women was dementia and Alzheimer's disease - accounting for 10.3% of female deaths.
